Power, War, Redemption, and Ethics

February 21, 28 and March 6, 2024 – Sessions take place from 8:30 to 9:30 pm ET on three Wednesdays. Registered participants will receive weekly recording.

How would the Talmud have us relate to the national, political, and historical elements of Jewishness: what does it mean for Jews (not) to have political and military power? Can we balance our tradition’s universal commitment to the equal value of every human life with practices or institutions that make the safety and wellbeing of Jews their goal? We will look at these questions – the concerns raised and thrown into relief by Israel’s efforts to defend itself and its citizens against Hamas – through the fragmented, unsettled and unsettling lens of a variety of Talmudic passages. All passages will be available in English, and no prior experience of Talmud study is required.
