We are grateful to the Sanders family for supporting the annual Miriam Hasson z”l Sephardic Shabbat. This year’s Shabbat will feature the Jewish community of Bulgaria. For more information, click here.
The evening will showcase a Bulgarian-inspired dinner menu. Dinner will open with remarks from David Sanders, and follow with the opportunity to enjoy the meal in a relaxed atmosphere, free from anymore formal speeches or presentations. After dinner, Professor Benatov will discuss Jewish life in Bulgaria during the early 20th century, and he will focus on the fate of Bulgaria’s Jewish community during WWII.
On Saturday, Ambassador Rubin (Yale College ’83) will share his experiences as a Jewish American U.S. ambassador to Bulgaria, as well as his extensive involvement (together with his wife) with the modern Jewish community in Bulgaria. Later in the day at 5:45, Professor Benatov will deliver an engaging talk about the Jews of Bulgaria before Mincha.
The cost of Shabbat dinner is 1 meal swipe or $30. For students (undergraduates and grad/professional students) who are not on meal plan, a generous donor covers the cost of the meal. To help us make sure as many people can access Shabbat dinner as possible, if you are on meal plan, please reserve your dinner swipe for use at Slifka. If you are in the Yale “trainee” category (i.e. post doc, post bacc, junior researcher), you are covered by the donor. Please direct any questions to Rachel.
Reserve your spot for Shabbat Dinner (Fridays 7:30PM), Shabbat Lunch (Saturday 12:30PM), or all 3 meals (Shabbat Dinner, Shabbat Lunch and Third Meal – held on Saturday 10 minutes after sunset).
